ATS Formula 3 Cup
Spiess delegation attends F3 weekend
At the Nürburgring, a highly interested group of 20 Spiess Motorenbau GmbH employees and family members looked over the shoulders of their fellow engineers. So, it was perfect timing that Laurens Vanthoor succeeded in winning one of the ATS Formula 3 Cup rounds and taking the championship lead, with his Dallara Volkswagen.
In the ATS Formula 3 Cup event held in the support programme of the ADAC 24-Hour Race, the 17-year old Belgian celebrated his second race win in the only third round of the season. Furthermore, he finished runner-up in the second race of the event held in front of the record crowd of 235,000 spectators – and secured a pole position. Thanks to his successful Nürburgring weekend, Laurens Vanthoor now holds the championship lead, followed by Switzerland’s Rahel Frey and his Dutch team-mate Stef Dusseldorp.
“I’m really happy with my achievements although things didn’t run completely as planned. I wanted to pressurise and – if possible – pass Rahel as early as on lap one as I knew that she would be really fast, over the distance,” explained Vanthoor. “Unfortunately, her start was virtually perfect and I had no chance of closing in on her.” As Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen had given him the advice to do without taking unnecessary risks and focus on the championship instead, Vanthoor opted for doing exactly that – and succeeded in defending his lead.
The next two ATS Formula 3 Cup rounds will be held on 06th and 07th June at the Hockenheimring. Extraordinary opportunity: all opened stands can be accessed free for the whole weekend! Even to enter the paddock and experience the racing circus at first hand costs only 10€ per person and day.
