ATS Formula 3 Cup

All good things come in threes

Talking about a full success is more than justified: the ATS Formula 3 Cup Championship was won by a 2-litre Volkswagen engine, the rookie cup winner relied on Volkswagen power – and the ‘AvD Speedpokal’ also was secured by dint of a Volkswagen power unit. “The ATS Formula 3 Cup is an important young-gun series and the fastest German single-seater series. Therefore, having won these three titles in superior style represents a massive success for Spiess,” underlines Managing Director Holger Spiess.

Laurens Vanthoor (Dallara F307 Volkswagen) is the 2009 ATS Formula 3 Cup Champion. Being 18 years old, the Belgian is the youngest champion in the series’ history. Vanthoor won 11 of the season’s 18 races, secured 11 pole positions and set 9 fastest race laps. Now, the young Team van Amersfoort Racing driver is about to make his next step on the motor-racing ladder – to the Formula 3 Euro Series.

The 2009 rookie title was won by Stef Dusseldorp. The Dutchman also scored the maximum points available in 11 of the 18 races. He is just 20 years old and therefore predestined to contest another ATS Formula 3 Cup season. He also raced a Dallara F307 entered by his compatriot Frits van Amersfoort.

The ‘AvD-Speedpokal’, tendered by Germany’ oldest automobile club, ‘AvD’, was dominated by the champion, Laurens Vanthoor. At the end of the season, the hopeful Belgian talent had a total of 21 points on his tally, with the second-placed driver having to settle for five.

This year’s successes will be followed by new ones in 2010. The ATS Formula 3 Cup is heading to the right direction and the planning for the 2010 season has reached its final phase. Just as this year, the Formula 3 will represent a main attraction of the ADAC Weekend package and the TV magazine will even be extended, next year.
